User Interface design patterns.
http://time-tripper.com/uipatterns/

I've spent a lot of time looking at 'design patterns' from a coding perspective over the last couple of months. Now I'm working on a project that's been very carefully worked graphically, and I started to see design patterns in the user interface too. Couple of googles later and I found this.

Typetester

I've just discovered this really interesting and useful application to compare screen fonts: Typetester.

Proof, 2/3 of Americans are thick as sh*t...

According to a new Gallup poll, ONLY A Third of Americans say Evidence Has Supported Darwin's Evolution Theory :

"Only about a third of Americans believe that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is a scientific theory that has been well supported by the evidence, while just as many say that it is just one of many theories and has not been supported by the evidence. The rest say they don't know enough to say. Forty-five percent of Americans also believe that God created human beings pretty much in their present form about 10,000 years ago. A third of Americans are biblical literalists who believe that the Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word."

In another article I read, staff at Science Museums are actually being tutored in how to handle creationist hecklers!

This has got to be a joke...right...?

mx.transitions

Nice little app to test the different tween modes in F8. Worth a look to remind yourself less used types (that you might otherwise hand code) such as 'photo', 'iris', 'pixel disolve' and 'blind' are already there...

mx.transitions

Looks nice..

But that's because it's in a nice white room with nice hands holding it..

Scripted Snowflakes

The new Flash 8 possibilities have me scouring my bookmarks for things to steal. I dug this up.

Hugo Liu's is easily my favourite. See his description here.

IPTV - an emerging opportunity?

Been seeing a lot of talk lately about IPTV (TV over the internet) and how it will revolutionise watching habits.

It's the whole 'any program at your fingertips any time of day' sell, and my first thoughts were 'your gonna need GoogleTV to help you find stuff'...but I'm pretty sure google have already thought of that :)

Then I thought a little further, and can imagine the whole blogg phenomenon repeating itself as a way of sorting the wheat from the chaff (i.e. I mostly read blogs to find out whats worth looking at on the web, like peer recommendations really)

Then I read the link below, and started to think a bit closer to home and day to day work. Looks like it could be an exciting time for the 'Flash Platform'...

Oh my god...

not only does the worlds stupidest man already have a big red button, he's now trying to push through laws allowing him to give orders to '...preempt an attack by a nation or a terrorist group using weapons of mass destruction. The draft also includes the option of using nuclear arms to destroy known enemy stockpiles of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.'

Washington Post Article

Flash 8 is out there...

Well as everyone has probably already heard the new Macromedia Studio 8 is now out, time to start playing with the new features. Of course, sods' law, my Macromedia Devnet subscription (that would have given me access to all the new software) ran out about 2 weeks ago. bum.

Also spotted this that looks quite cool... Flash 8 Professional: Seminar by the Sea, it's being hosted by Guy Watson (flashguru) and Rob Bateman (BBC)

BBC opens TV archive to remixers

BBC opens TV archive to remixers, and in typical BBC style forgets to put a URL on the news story, DOH!

Content available so far from the BBC is actually found here and some stuff from the BFI here.

Now all we need to do is find project that needs black and white footage of 'The Margaret Morris Dancers demonstrate some interesting dance moves, at Pourville, France in 1921.' :)

i love portfolios like this, no tiny irritating navigation, large previews...

iPod ROKR...? Pile of poo more like!

I knew it would be crap from the moment I heard Motorola were involved...

Motorola - HelloMoto UK - ROKR E1 - Homepage

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the things that made the iPod 'cool' were it's funky design, inventive wheel interface and ample storage, none of which feature in this device. Instead you have the boring ipod text interface stuck in a boring clunky phone. To top it all off, they are advertising it holds 'up to 100 songs'...hmmm, so thats half the capacity of a shuffle.

On the bright side, if you do want one they'll be giving these away free within days :)

[EDIT : Looks like the Observer agrees. They also make some interesting points about the commercial reasons preventing this from ever being a decent product.]

Eyeblaster adds 'Behavioral Sequencing' features

Just got the new Eyeblaster specs. One that stands out is the demo of the new behavioral tracking features...

View Demo

Kinda in two minds about this...it's one of those features that advertisers will find really cool, and at the end of the day if they choose to shove advertising in my face it may as well be vaguely interesting. But then on the down side it's yet another large company tracking my movements and gathering invaluable user data from me in return for absolutely no personal payback.

Dunno why I'm moaning really though, haven't clicked an online ad in years :)

Blend modes

Gotta admit I've never fully understood all the blend modes available in apps like Photoshop. Guess it's about time I did, seeing as they are available in Flash8 now. So here's a full list of all of them with explanations and examples.

We have to make one for everyone!

For All Seasons

Yesterday I attended a pretty boring BD4D with the single exception of Andreas Muller who showed some really impressing stuff like this 'For All Seasons' piece . He introduced the next evolution of the project which uses AR to make the stuff happen wherever you want (ie. your hand, your head...) everything controlled by a camera mouse.

Well, we had a real big problem with this on a project recently, and guess what, right after we finish it someone launches another solution...

FlashGuru - Flash 8 Learning & Resources

Interesting list from Flashguru of the skills he thinks will be required from Flash developers given the new features of F8. Not sure I agree with it all (much of it you should know already, and displacement and convolution are going to get real boring real fast!), but a good start...
